The truth about Microsoft Global Services India

Last year, I decided to go back to India for good even though I had a green card and home in the US. So, leaving my $150K salary, SUV, house and sending all the stuff back home, I decided to go back to “my” home country India. It was all good until I was approached to interview by MGSI – Microsoft Global Services, India, which is a 100% subsidiary of MCS, USA. For the client “MGSI” is invisible. It is just MCS.

I had a lot of telephonic interviews, and finally got called to Hyderabad India for my final face to face interview. I was happy because I always wanted to join Microsoft as my work experience is mostly in MS Technologies. I completed a practical test with a fully working demo, which passed with flying colors. Then I cleared my final interview with one of the directors in MGSI. So far so good. The only thing was the people there looked dull and morose, and this stuck in my mind when I went back home.

You know Indian families – they were overjoyed that I got in Microsoft, and I decided to join. I was very trusting of Microsoft as they are a very large company and I always admired them. I joined even before getting a formal letter or knowing the exact terms. It took them 3 weeks to give me the letter which had weird details like a slightly different salary structure than what I expected (in the US, if it is 100K, it is 100K, not 75K actually). This was the first sign that things were run differently in India. Then it had really draconian terms like 90 day notice period or otherwise I would have to pay them 2 months salary and relocation costs.

MS has the weird policy that if they took in a person for a particular position, even if the hired person had no idea or experience with that technology, without giving any training on the same, they would simply put him in a project on that technology.

I did get time to study and I did study and worked without too much difficulty in a large project. I have to say one thing about MGSI that these people have no culture or respect for others. The office was the worst kind of hostile, abusive environment I have ever seen in my experience. Even if you did do good work, it was not acknowledged, and people would treat you brutally.

I talked to people who worked there for several years, and no one was happy working there. This is because everyone knows that SharePoint is built on very old and very ancient COM technology and is very difficult to work with. Nobody wanted to work on it, but they were forced to, because usually the work done by MGSI was that which nobody wanted to touch in the US.

I also learnt that Microsoft does not care about anything except making money, even if it means selling what everyone knew as bad obsolete technology, if it meant they could make money out of licenses.

So, the morale was very, very low. In addition to all of these constraints, people had to travel a lot during the year, get paid in rupees, while they hardly got to stay at home with family. You would be in places like Egypt, South Africa or Vietnam all the time. The worst thing was this was the first large company where even people who worked there for a long time were unhappy with it. In the words of one person: “I hate it here, I wish I could leave, but I can’t”. He never told me why exactly he couldn’t leave even though he had been working there for a long time.

Very many people started leaving MS, because of this they added this draconian 90 day notice period to the employment agreement.

I worked there for a few months, and in the meantime, explained the problems to my manager who told me that, they already knew that this guy was abusive, disrupting work and were working on it. I made the mistake of believing him, only to find out that they kept him in the same position, and actually gave him a promotion. So, thing obviously got very bad.

I had great difficult keeping my hands off this guy towards the end, because I wanted to slap him hard the next time he said something rude and brutal.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I resigned one fine day, and went away. I explained the truth in my resignation letter and talked to a few managers. I definitely did not want to work in a company like this.

The truth about Microsoft in India is that, they hire very talented people through extensive interviews. Maybe one in 300, and give them really junk work which nobody in the US wants to touch. If by mistake, some good work does come to India, then when focus shifts to that, they move it back to Redmond. Some of the people they hire come from outside the country like me. And we feel very let down by this experience.

This is true exploitation of talented Indian software engineers and making sure that, they never get a chance to realize their true potential. It is like taking the best grads from a college and making them work in an abusive sweatshop environment. This is the worst part about Microsoft in India. I sacrificed a lot to come back to India, and I was let down. I will never make the mistake again.

Let everyone know the truth about what really MGSI is:

1. They cheat and lie to their customers.
2. Their own employees don’t feel happy doing this day in and day out.
3. They are the most arrogant, cruel and abusive, uncultured people I have ever met.
4. They tarnish the image of the parent company.
5. There is no software process or SDLC in place.
6. If good code means ignoring requirements and just making sure that the code passes the rules engine, this is what they do.
7. Their idea of software development is to hire 10 engineers, tell them to do something and sleep over it.
8. They are busier trading blames with each other than anything else.
9. Forget international quality, even local Indian companies do a better job.
10. They have a closed mind.

    1. I have spent more than a decade at Microsoft Global services, now IGD (India Global Delivery). To thrive here and achieve success in terms of promotion, moving up roles, moving up in levels you need one of the following.
      1. Be a relative, friend, neighbor, family close to any of LT folks Delivery manger, Service practice leader, Director.
      2. Be a diversity.
If you are very hard working, politically right, not direct, flexible, intelligent and be innocent, you may have some success but not guaranteed.

  2. In soln engineering employees worked very hard for the managers to grow. The management is only concerned about how to save their ass, but not about employee develpment growth or rewarding their employees

    1. Reasons
      1. MS IGD is a private run tight knit group. The LT team has no backbone. They will never standup for their subordinates. This is very true especially in the middle management. Be it the Technical delivery mangers, delivery managers or practice directors.
      a. Once you approach them with a problem, you will looked at against company, not have flexible mindset, problem creator. They won’t speak up or try to solve your problem by arguing for what is right, because they don’t want to offend their peers or managers.
      b. They bring their own people, friends and families. They want to keep promoting their ALs. I suppose you understand what AL means.
      c. They are incorrect collaborators in suit and coat. Most of the folks have been somehow caught warned when trying to take advantage of their diversity subordinate.
      d. They hires lot of machs and college interns. They spend on them taking them to parties. Why???? Because these people will give them good score in MS poll. This way they continue to exist. If these interns, college fresh hires wake up and stand for themselves, the workplace would be much better. They are the future citizens, and they should not get enticed by cheap money, alcohol and shut up. This is how our nation is being managed. Shut the young up and they realize things are out of control. This is how our country was ruled by keeping the young in the dark.
      e. The internal job posting is one of the biggest joke. Do you know where you will be posting for job that is already filled in or taken? It’s an eye wash. Name sake they will interview.

      Delete
  3. the LT team is always talking about employee growth just for the sake of talking. whatever LT initiative which has been taken is just eye wash or do not have any effort or results. They are only thinking about utilization and billing. people cannot take up work what they like. I hope amit is watching all this. either amit is a dumb guy or people under him are cheating him badlyy..

    1. 2. Msigd Has Been Polluted By Former Msit People
      a. There was a organization called GDCI a decade back. This was called as global delivery center India. It became msit later. This team was then merged back to idc later. Now around early 2008 - 2010 many employees copied the CEO, LT of msit, idc and mgsi and sent communication on the reality. These employees exposed how the local people abused other state people, how they promoted their own dna, family friends and built an empire.
      b. When this information become wide spread, few people from msit started moving into igd. They started building the same people. This folks, mfs, took on positions like engagement managers, professional development and resource managers and practice leaders and directors.
      c. They then converted igd like msit slowly.

    1. 3. Only ALs gets promoted, encouraged
      a. Soon the same mf, LT folks encourage only people who will do al.
      b. They will give 0 rating for people who speak up.
      c. They will reprimand people who escalate on folks who are poor performers.
      d. They will only encourage diversity colleagues that’s HR policy
All of us need to work 200% to make up for their diversity counterparts. I have also worked and managed many diversity who are real gems. Some of them colleagues are extremely talented, with high aspirations. But the other half need the pass to get promoted, get hike and survive.

    1. 4. Its NOT IDC
      a. Unlike the lt in idc the lt in igd are non technical, sales, and non it managers who joined from other indian based service companies managing herds.
      b. Idc lt is made up of talents similar to our CEO. They were once developers, program managers, product unit mangers and group managers. The mgsi, msgd, igd (multi named ms igd) have leadership who ever managers, team leads in companies like satyam, infosys, wipro, tcs. What can you expect??
      c. The type of work in ms igd is that of pure consulting. Its about passing information from here and there, understanding customer, selling yourself and your team, lobbying ms products, delivery some solution to the customer. Unlike idc where there is lot of technical work, and hands on hard core development
Better together in this journey and better further from igd, Take care.

  13. Very sorry to hear the state of affairs in MS. But lets face it, most leaders in India are weak and so is the system.

People tend to be on survival mode mostly and they are easily threatened with slight sight of intelligence from any of the team members.

But, there are organizations run by efficient leaders that provide environment conducive to nurture talent and contribution.

Hope you will find one of them next time :)

  18. I so agree, God bless those who are in MGSI at the moment! Not even a single person I met from MGSI in past 4-5 years ever came across as a happy and content soul, they are always in some kind of mad rat race. Aah "Mad Rat Race" - sounds common rite? But MGSI is different. It's rat race is gonna transform you completely into a true mad rat, with no purpose in life, or even at job, a loser on family front, a disaster as a person! But yes, the packages, the brand name - 'Microsoft' makes it difficult for the rats inside MGSI to realize what's happening to them unless they come out of it, and look at it from outside! Just a few months here are gonna assure that you will loose on your health front as well, and end up paying 'whatever extra MGSI offers to you as compared to other companies' on your medical treatments.

As most of us know, major Indian based software companies not only have 90 days notice period, but also there will be some bond/agreement between the employees and company, if they were sending him/her onsite. Apart from that everybody may have an idea about the environment of top notch Indian IT Companies !!!

  26. Even MSIT is the same. They run the show using Hitler's tactics. Forget about innovation, they are not even in 100 mile radius with it. They are arrogant and if you see during the interviews they expect you to know everything. They wan't c #,SQL server oldest/latest, Sharepoint, cloud computing, virtualisation, stacks, CodedUI, performance, TFS, Deployment, Environment Management, blah blah blah... They would want you to know everything. Are you kidding me... Forget about whether you use it later..It takes years to master one. They are barbaric and have utter disrespect to vendors. They pay for 8 hrs but make you slog 14 hrs.. Minimum.. be sure.. Very soon they take over your soul and though you might do extraordinary.. for them this is just ok and they challenge you again... Eventually whoever is close to managment gets the benefit. All their work gets done because of vendors... AND no vendor is happy.. People are scared to join Microsoft. I worked as both vendor and an employee. I saw that they have hired around 70 guys for a project and as soon as project got over they put a party at N grill and were asking employees to resign. I mean what a moron..

  30. The best thing is to spend time in MGSI till 18 months and then apply internall to other better teams at MS. This is what i did. If you love MS, working at a good team is also important to get the actual feel of the MS culture. MGSI rots the culture.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I couldn't agree more. This is the UGLY TRUTH !!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I worked for MGSI [Now MSGD] for over 5 years and I must say peer groups and people are really good to work with except bunch of looser called PDRMs(People Manager) and Practice directors.

Management is always busy creating culture of unhealthy competition with fancy schemes [in addition to your regular work which will be enough to cripple your personal/family life] to evaluate your performance which with your best efforts and intentions you'll not be able to finish. This gives them power to deny you a promotion or even inflation-adjusted-well-deserved-industry-standard raise.

Interestingly they will surprise you at the time of your performance evaluation that some hidden and undocumented goal is missed by you. Hello....!! and if you protest; you'll be stamped as bad apple.

Microsoft has business model of hours. More hours individual work more they save for Microsoft [Being cheap labour in India]. So quantity matters here not the quality. Thus the after spending some time in MSGD you'll forget about quality but rather will think like cheap Chinese factory labor on how to clock more and more hours doing "anything" and "everything".

These looser will ensure that you keep doing your hours irrespective of your skill-set/aspirations and will not hesitate to trade your soul to please their bosses in US. Being old and stuck they will do whatever they can to keep you worrying about your job and get you stuck to same hell with them with nowhere to go.

Finally; MSGD is not good pay master unless you're making via onsite. Dont be fooled with Microsoft tag as its just to trap to get talented people at low salaries [even by Indian standards].

    -Ex MSGD

  33. PDRMs and Practice directors are the biggest jokers in this organization. Leadership is absolutely dishonest and rogue. Management is trained to make the employees bakra. Don't get fooled by the name of Microsoft. HR is well tied up with the poor leadership in MSGD. Yes, only the fit!! can join and survive here. Well, the obvious question is what makes you fit here?? Read through the qualities of leadership above. That answers the question!!

The problem is with the women in HR treating this place like a school and them the principal, they have no clue about a professional environment and what it takes to grow business and a company with good talent.

manager waste more time in planning to fuck-up other careers. HR is namesake and blind and tool that is use to treat people badly. lot of show business and eye wash for Microsoft. Do the apple polish and get the promotions and hikes.

  53. go and work for MSGD you will turn out as WASTE for industry. after some years you will find you do not know anything about current industry trends because either you will be busy in ass-licking of the various type of managers to approve the visa, to get projects, to get billable that part of your CTC and eventually you will turn out to be a slave.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It is a crap organization spoiling the name of Microsoft and surviving under the mercy of MCS. You will come across the funniest/dumpest role in IT industry called PDRMs whos job is nothing other than a secretary or coordinator and get paid a hefty amount. They don't know anything about technology other than the name, they evaluate and decide your performance! And the worst part is Hindi is the first language in this company. I heard even many managers speaking in their native language Hindi in conference calls with US customers and they expect you to speak in Hindi. Soft skills of many managers are pathetic. Many of them don't even know how to form a sentence in English properly though they act like English/Americans. Company meeting is an ultimate pleasure when you will find these jokers on stage.
Many of these manager buffoons think that they can manage Bill Gates and they can invent Windows! There are a bunch of managers who are only interested in chasing skirts and getting into it. I came across managers who hire female employees who were no hire on technical and hands on rounds. Long story short if you are not into ass kissing or you don’t wear a skirt and ready to lick your manager, don’t get fascinated with the Microsoft name. There are lot of stories floating about illicit behavior of Managers including PDRMs, Ems/PMs in the company. MSGD is nowhere near to Microsoft culture.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lol. I do agree that PDRMs are the funniest/dumbest role in MSGD.
In MSGD,people think they are the most intelligent people on earth but actually they are the most dumbest people on earth. This Org. teach you only one thing - go and lick ass of your managers, satisfy their egos.
Even though you are excellent technically/functionally,work hard, got client appreciations, work beyond office timings, never got any escalations.
Above stated things would not suffice to get a good rating ,you have to satisfy their egos.

How could you satisfy their egos:-
    1. Go for lunch with them
    2. Spend weekends with them
    3. Enjoy in Party.
    4. have tea with them.
    5. Have drinks with them.
    6. Watch Movies with them.
    7. Praise them ,below are the examples seen here
    a. You looks so young even though he is completely bald.
    b. oh you are so young i thought you must be fresher. In reality she looks like your grand maa.
    c. You are so intelligent. In real, Xth standard student has more IQ than him/her.
    d. Play Cricket with them. Make sure while bowling your manager should get a six or four.

Come very late ,Spend Nights in office. You will become star.
Keep Licking ass then only you can survive .Avoid Licking get firing, escalations, bad reputation, insult etc.

  72. I had around 8 years experience when i joined MSGD, and have done around 3 end-to end implementations in my previous organization. I joined based on the JD, i honestly thought this will take my skills to the next level. It was such a shocker, when i realized that the job had no relevance to the JD i was provided.

I still remember i was asked by the director, " what does Sr. Consultants do in your org?" I replied "as part of the team i was in, we will do implementation projects and mostly the architecture however was designed by an Architect." he replied back saying "Over here Sr Consultants do design/architect roles".

There are some guys who are talented, no doubt, but on an average a Sr Cons and Architects are very average. Some times i felt i was much better off them. Once during a meeting, an architect asked "what is an xml file?" .

For 2 years i felt everyday that i was working with below average people and i wondered what gave them promotions.

In my 2 years i came across one, who had some good skills and was a Sr Consultant.

If you really care about peace of mind, never join such crap orgs!!

I have been selected in MSGD recently. So I wanted to know what kind of job profile it will have me as a software developer? I have an experience of around 3 and half years. so what range of CTC they will provide? And will it be good now to join or the situation is still worse as above?

    1. Hi... Did you join MSGD..? Please guide us with your experience so that it would be really helpful for us. And also kindly us know CTC they offered.

  84. MSGD is the worst place to be work. Never join in such organization. Their compensation is pretty poor. Yearly hike is never going above 1 digit for last 1 year. Stock level is lowest among all Microsoft subsidiaries. In other Microsoft entry fresher's used to join in level 59, but in MSGD it is starting with level 56. It will take minimum 30-48 month to be promoted in next level. No stock option until you are reaching level 59. And again stock option is very poor compare to other Microsoft entry. In MS IDC with 8years experience CTC will be base 20-30 L + 3-6 L bonus + 5-12 L stock. But in MSGD, you can get 12-18 L range. Not more than that. Quality of management is very poor. No growth mindset. Only foot licker will be promoted and given better opportunities. One of the biggest Microsoft values openness, Honesty and transparency are string prohibited in here. No meritocracy. 90% strong technical people can't sustain in this organization long time.

    ReplyDelete
  85. "Yearly hike is never going above 1 digit for last 1 year" it is true for last 3-4 years. So be aware when you join this organization. In next 2 years you expect your yearly hike will be 3-7% range only. If you perform very good and if you join in little higher level with better salary, then forget about next 3-4 years. It will never go beyond 7 % range. First 2 years you expect only 3-5 % range only.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Also many people join in this organization for Onsite aspiration. But now OC opertunity is reduced and so many people are already in queue. So you expect to get OC opertunity only after 2-3 years. Also 80% of the OC opertunity are short term (3-6 month only), with out much onsite benefit.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I have spent more than a decade at Microsoft Global services, now IGD (India Global Delivery)and 2 decades in Microsoft .
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    Reasons
    1. MS IGD is a private run Mafia group.
They want to keep promoting their A$$L1king.
    c. They are henchmen in suit and coat.

    2. Msigd Has Been Polluted By Former Msit People
    a. There was a organization called GDCI a decade back. Now around early 2008 - 2010 many employees copied the CEO, LT of msit, idc and mgsi and sent communication on the reality. These employees exposed how the local telugu people abused other state people, how they promoted family friends.
    b. When this information become wide spread, people from msit started moving into igd. They started building the same people.

    4. Its NOT IDC
Unlike idc where there is lot of technical work, and hands on hard core development
Better together in this journey and better further from igd, Take care.
